HEALTHCARE
“He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything” – Arabic proverb
India has made rapid strides in the health sector since independence. However, various eye opening data from NFHS clearly indicate that access to healthcare still remains a challenge. While the health statistics of rural India continue to be poor, the health status and access to health for the poor in urban slum dwellers has surfaced to be equally deplorable. Despite accounting for 1/4th of the country’s poor population, urban areas have less than 4% of government primary health care facilities.Urban slum dwellers suffer from adverse health conditions owing to mainly two reasons –first the lack of education and thus lack of awareness; and second the unwillingness to lose a day’s wage in order to reach the nearest medical facility. Health for underprivileged, which is a desperate need, thus remains unaddressed. As a result, cases of poor women health, malnourishment in children and deaths from preventable diseases from such areas are always high. The neglect in even the simplest preventive medical treatment usually leads to a more serious ailment and eventually into deaths. The need of the hour is thus a two pronged approach – first to bring quality health care services to doorsteps of the needy and second to promote healthcare awareness and contemporary health care seeking behavior among the underprivileged. In such a scenario a mobile health care services delivery system is the most practical mechanism. And in subscription to this view, Smile Foundation has initiated the Smile on Wheels programme. This is a unique mobile hospital programme that seeks to address problems of mobility, accessibility and availability of primary health care with a special focus on children and women, in urban slums and remote rural areas.
Environmental issues in India:problems and solutions
Introduction
Pollution is a serious problem that badly affects the entire earth and living organisms including man. Major source of pollutants are combustion of fuels, industrial wastes, dust, mist, smoke, fog, fumes, and many others. It is a fact that most of these sources are inevitable for us. That makes this problem a puzzled phenomena. We are living in a world that is suffocating out of polluted environment. Major conditions for life to exist; air and water are polluted in an unimaginable way. Nasty smell in Indian cities suffocates us. In a developing country like India, where rich are the richest and poor are the poorest, pollution is a threat for our existence. In this highly populated country, we must accept that industrialization and modernization are inevitable. At the same time, we must remember that problems due to pollution is the result of lack of care and ignorance. Resolution of this immense problem, thus become the most serious in our country.
Present condition of India
Problems due to pollution came in to the attention of central government with fourth five year plan. As a result of this, water act was passed by the government. States got permission for the formation of the pollution control board.Following this pollution control board was established on 1981 in twenty five states including Kerala. When government understood the worse condition of India, environmental protection act was passed on 1986. Like many other matters, these laws failed during execution and made present condition of India pitiable. We are suffering from air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution and the most disastrous and threatening garbage pollution. Pollution is emerging as the most serious issue above our economic problems. Vigorous population growth boosts the pollution rate.
Pollution in India
Most serious type of pollution in our country is water pollution. Many Industries are functioning in our country. Sewage from these industries are the main cause of water pollution. These wastes are drained into the water resources. Sewage treatment is the only solution. Most of the known rivers in India are nasty. This includes the holy rivers Ganges and Yamuna. Even small rivers like Bharathapuzha are deeply polluted. People living in the bangs of these rivers are suffering from various contagious diseases. Many unknown diseases arise due to this. Air pollution is mainly due to burning of fossil fuels like coal and petrol. it cause respiratory diseases. Usage of lead in petrol was banned in India recently. This shows the seriousness of the condition. Air pollution is common in the major cities and industrial areas like Mumbai and Bangalore. Due to emission of various acidic compounds from near by industries world famous monument Taj Mahal is facing destruction. Imagine the condition of people in these areas. garbage pollution or solid waste pollution is mainly due to population growth. When population density increases requirements also increases. So amount of waste products too increases. This is a puzzling phenomena. Though fossil fuel plants comes t the rescue, they are not enough. Population should be controlled initially. it is almost impossible.
Solutions to control pollution
their are numerous methods to reduce pollution, but most of them are not practical. Moreover people are not ready to accept them. Recycling of waste products is the most advisable to reduce pollution. Do not drain wastes into water sources. Alternative methods should be practiced. Reduce the use of fuels. Use wind mills and solar energy to produce electricity. In industries fuels are essential. Usage can be reduced by using efficient machines. Same method is applicable in the case of vehicles. Nuclear wastes should be disposed with intensive care. Proper waste draining system should be present in hospitals. Huge industries should be replaced to isolated areas. This holds good in the case of nuclear power plants. These are the most practical methods. As I said earlier though there are numerous methods, most of them are not practical.
Conclusion
India is the second most populated country. So pollution should be given significance in our country. Pollution becomes a puzzling phenomena due to this fact. We must adapt new methods to reduce pollution to the maximum. Otherwise coming generations will suffer a lot. That should not happen. Environment provides the living condition of earth. Unbearable heat that we are suffering during summer and unexpected changes in climate are the fruit of our deeds. Global warming and green house effect are threatening us. Flood may occur in near future. End of all this will be nasty. We should remember that prevention is better that cure. We should fight against pollution and should escape from it's impact. Without pollution, nothing can happen. With pollution, anything can happen. Just remember that.
